Anatomy and Physiology (Head and
Neck)
This course
examines the structure and function
of the human body. It provides
education outlining the basic
anatomical reference systems,
directional terms and planes,
structural units and cavities of the
body with an emphasis on the
anatomical features of the head and
neck. Surface landmarks of the
skull bones and the major
masculatory vascular supply will
also be covered to assist the
student in overall dental care and
treatment of the patient. |

Business and Computer Skills
This course
will outline the various computer
programs available in a dental
office. The students will learn
relevant information concerning
computerized entry of medical
history information, appointment
scheduling, treatment contacts,
insurance information and billing
procedures. |
|
|
|
Clinical Placement
Upon
conclusion of the courses, the
student will be required to complete
80 hours clinical placement at a
Dental Office |

|
|
Dental Materials
This course is
designed to familiarize the students
with the general characteristics of
dental materials, the preparation of
restorative and esthetic materials
and the selection criteria for these
specific materials. |
|

|
Dental Radiography
This course
will provide the fundamental
knowledge of radiation physics and
the characteristics of radiation as
well as the biological effects of
x-radiation on patients and
operators. Students will learn
techniques for the exposing,
processing and mounting of
radiographs. Quality assurance and
asepsis control will also be
emphasized along with all aspects of
client exposure and safety
protocols. |

Disease Transmission and
Microbiology
This course
will provide fundamental knowledge
of prevention of transmission of
diseases in the dental field. It
will outline infectious agents and
invading organisms. Discussions and
lectures will also cover factors
that influence the development of
infections and the factors that
alter their defenses. The main
types of infectious diseases will
also be covered ( Hep A, B & C, HIV,
Staph., Strep, etc.) |

Dental Specialties
This course
outlines the various types of
specialties found within the dental
profession including Endodontics,
Oral surgery, Orthodontics,
Prosthodontics, Implants, Paedontics,
Oral Pathology and Public Health. |

|
|
Histology and Oral Embryology
This course
will introduce the students to the
structure and function of tissues
and prenatal development throughout
the stages before birth. The
student will gain full knowledge of
developmental disturbances (genetic
and environmental) as well as stages
of tissue and tooth development. |
|
|
|
Infection Control
This course
considers the theories regarding
chains of infection, types of
infections and how the immune system
provides the body with resistance to
infections. Students are taught
guidelines relevant to the risk of
disease transmission, sterilization
and disinfection and well as
universal precautions used in the
dental field. |
|
|
|
Medical Emergencies
This course
will introduce the student to
circumstances or conditions that
require immediate medical
attention. Protocols need to be
followed in each dental practice
when an emergency arises and the
students must be familiar with the
contents of the emergency and
medical kits. |

|
Pharmacology
This course is
designed to give students an
overview of Pharmacology. Students
will learn theory and practical
skills relating to the role of the
dental assistant in relation to
pharmacology and nutrition. |

|
|
Oral Diagnosis and Treatment
Planning
This course introduces the student
to all components of dental
charting, record information and the
gathering of the patient data. All
relevant information concerning
study models, accurate radiographs,
intra-oral examinations and hard and
soft tissue examinations |
|
|
|
Oral Pathology
This course
will provide fundamental knowledge
of diseases of the oral cavity and
teach the students how to
differentiate between the normal and
abnormal conditions that appear. |
|
|
|
Preventative Dentistry
This course
will allow students to gain the
knowledge of the signs and symptoms
of major dental diseases and the
preventative measures used to
control them. |
|
|
|
Psychology and Communications
This course will provide the
fundamental knowledge of Psychology
and communications. Students will
have a better understanding of human
behaviours and how to effectively
deal with difficult individuals and
situations. |
|
|
|
Restorative/Cosmetic Dentistry
(Nutrition)
This course is an expansion of the
basic knowledge of restorative and
esthetic materials, their uses in
dentistry and an overview of
nutrition relating to cosmetic
dentistry. The student will be
exposed to all forms, properties and
procedures consistent with direct
and indirect bonding methods. |

Tooth Morphology
This course is designed to provide
fundamental knowledge of the
location of all teeth (permanent and
primary) and the terminology used in
discussing features of each tooth.
Discussions will ensue regarding
clinical considerations of both
primary and permanent dentitions. |
